Playdough Activities

Making playdough mats is a great way to use these free printables. Young kids will get a lot of practice building their fine motor skills making playdough numbers with these mats.

An easy way to have young learners practice number recognition is having them make numbers out of playdough on top of the large number on the free number playdough mats. They can roll playdough into a long “snake” then lay it on the number digit.

As they are making the number with play doh have them name the number and practice counting to that number. Rolling the play doh “snakes” is a great activity for their fine motor muscles.

Younger children can practice one-to-one correspondence by making the number for one of the fun number playdough mats and then using our free number ten frame playdough mat to make play dough balls for counting out the number. This activity is a fun hands-on way for preschool and kindergarten students to practice their counting skills and fine motor skills.

You can also have young students make the playdough numbers on the free playdough mats and then use a dot marker or dry-erase marker to make dots to count out the number on the ten frame printable mat.

Dry-erase Markers

One of my favorite ways to have my kiddos use these printable mats is to have them trace the numbers with dry-erase markers. Big dry-erase markers are helpful for young learners with little hands still building their fine motor muscles.

The large number on each mat gives young children plenty of space for tracing each number. Young students can get lots of practice with number formation by reusing these mats. Slip each sheet into a page protector for an easy way to use and clean up these printables.

Toy Cars

Use these printable mats in a playful way by giving young kids little toy cars to drive over the numbers. For this activity you can either laminate the printable mats or even just print them on card stock.

Young students will start their toy car at the starting point on the number and drive the car in the same way they would write the number. This activity can help kids get interested in number formation before moving onto writing the numbers.

This is also the perfect way for students who have very little fine motor strength to work on number formation without having to miss out on the fun.
