Learning Mats

Colors and Shapes Worksheet

These colors and shapes worksheet bundles are perfect for helping young learners learn color names and basic shapes while they practice sorting. We have three downloadable bundles of learning mats with color sorting and shapes worksheets for hands-on activities and strengthening fine motor skills for preschool and kindergarten students.

I recommend laminating these printables to make them more durable and then add clear velcro dots to the back of the cut pieces and mats. This makes the learning mats durable and reusable.

These learning mat activities are great for homeschoolers and classroom teachers. We are a homeschool family, and I use these mats with my two year old and four year old. Many of these activities my two year old does independently while I work with my four year old.

Teachers will find that these mats are great for classroom use as well. They can be added to lesson plans for small groups with students who need extra help with color names and basic shapes or in math centers.

The Color Sort Learning Mat Bundle

Preschool students working on color recognition will enjoy this color sorting activity. Eleven different colors are included in this bundle, each with a vibrant mat with the color word at the top in the coordinating color and six colored picture cards for sorting.

The different colors included in this bundle are: green, blue, red, orange, yellow, purple, pink, black, brown, white, and gray.

Young learners will pull a card and identify the right color of the picture. They will then match it to the correct color mat.

There are many ways you can simplify and extend this activity. To make this activity more simple for my two year old, I only give her about four different colors for her to work on at a time.

To extend the activity you can have the student name each picture. They can also name other items they can think of or items around the room that are the same color.

Students working on letter recognition can spell out the color word at the top of each mat. Emergent readers can try reading each word on the picture cards and practice color sight words by reading the color names on the mats.

The Shapes Learning Mat Bundle

This bundle is great for many grade levels. Preschool students who need to work on basic shapes and 1st grade students who are learning more advanced shapes will all enjoy these printable activities.

The Match the Shapes Learning Mat is great for young learners beginning to identify different shapes. Students will pull a card and match the card to the same shape on the mat.

The different color shapes will help preschool students match the flat shapes. Emergent readers can practice sight words by reading the shape names.

The included shapes are: triangle, circle, rectangle, hexagon, square, diamond, oval, octagon, and pentagon.

The Sort the Shapes Learning Mat is perfect for adding to your sorting lesson plans. Students will pull a picture card and identify the shape of the object then add it to row of the basic shape it matches.

Preschool students can practice naming the different shapes. Kindergarten and 1st grade students can extend the activity by journaling another object they can think of the matches each shape or thinking of objects that are the shape of more advanced shapes.

The Trace the Shapes Learning Mat is perfect for students who need more work on their fine motor skills or want to practice drawing. This is great laminated to make it reusable then use a dry erase marker to trace each shape. In addition to tracing, students can identify the shape names as they trace.

The Color & Size Learning Mat Bundle

Practice sorting and color recognition with this learning mat bundle. Preschool students will enjoy the hands-on activities in this bundle.

The Park the Cars Learning Mat is a fun way for young learners to practice color names. Students will drive each car down the road and park it on the correct color.

Emergent readers can practice color sight words with the black and white mat by parking each car on the right color name without the help of it being colored.

The Sort by Size Learning Mat is a great addition to practicing sorting skills. Preschool students will pull a card and place it on the mat sorting by small, medium, and large.

I hope these learning mats are a fun addition to your math lesson plans and provide you with some change from basic worksheets.
